1. ISO 9001:2000 is a published International Standard giving the essential features for an effective Quality Management System. It is also recognised as European Standard EN ISO 9001 and British Standard BS EN ISO 9001.

2. Certification is obtained by a formal and detailed assessment of the organisation.

3. Independent third party certification is recognised as the "Hallmark" of a good quality firm or organisation. In many cases it will also be recognised by government purchasing bodies, such as the Military, Trade and Industry Departments, Health Departments and by firms from private industry, both large and small.

4. The reasons for obtaining ISO 9001 certification vary, depending on the needs and market of each organisation. The priorities will vary from company to company

i) It provides an excellent working model for good business practice.

ii) Certification can be vital/essential for survival of the company.

iii) It can also provide objective evidence of taking due care and diligence in case of litigation under the Consumer Protection, Product Liability or Health & Safety at Work Acts.

iv) To cut the costs of poor quality and instill a culture of continuous improvement.

v) To give effective management controls.

vi) It reduces internal and external conflicts.

vii) It gives a firm foundation for organisational development and growth.

viii) Staff absence or resignation can be effectively managed.

ix) It satisfies actual or probable contract requirements of major customers.

x) The status of the organisation is enhanced and it can be a source of pride to its staff.

xi) Successful certification can reduce or eliminate multiple second party assessments from customers.

5. The time taken to obtain successful certification can vary enormously. The main factors being

i) The size and complexity of the organisation.

ii) The scope of operation being assessed.

iii) The commitment of the management and staff.

iv) The skill, training and experience of the team implementing the system.

6. The stages required are

i) The organisation of the management structure and provision of formal documentation to describe the system and procedures to meet the requirements of the standard, whilst at the same time reflecting the needs of the company.

ii) Implementation, training and auditing.

iii) Planning and organisation for assessment.

iv) Applying to a certification body for assessment and certification.

v) Receive a satisfactory on-site assessment.

vi) Satisfactory maintenance of the system and associated certificate(s).
